Removing Material
Statement of Intent
When we look at the definition of relief there are many different applications of the word. Therefore, within the discipline of relief printmaking it would be fair to say the same statement. I have more or less perverted the meaning of the word and applied it to an installation piece.
First, I present the viewer with a usual bag stand that they might see in a grocery store or a Wal-Mart at the self-checkout lines. On the bags themselves is the statement “Thank you for your business!” Coupled with a “waving” American flag, there are many things at play within the bags themselves.
The American flag is a cultural sign embedded within our society in which its meaning has been shredded and redirected towards an insidious mark that declares ones own patriotism. Furthermore, the bag is telling the viewer that the material that he/she will be buying will be in America and will be supporting the capitalist ideals that it upholds. I then pervert both the meanings of the bags and the meaning of the word relief as I present the viewer with a roll of inventory labels handprinted with the individual words, “Everything you are fits inside here.” As the viewer places a label upon a bag and leisurely walks through the rest of the gallery to explore art, they are magnifying their role in this country.
"Subject, Object"
Statement of Intent
This piece explores the ideas of making the implicit, explicit. The act of producing an art object is more or less an implicit act. Minimal and Conceptual artists deconstructed the process of creating an art object. Here, instead of an abstract expressionist’s canvas, I have explicitly stated that the object in front of the viewer is art. There is no denying about what this object communicates on its surface it clearly states that it is art and it delineates how much space it requires. This is fairly problematic when referring to other works. Art usually does not function in on these explicit, non-metaphorical terms, rather meanings are constructed primarily by metaphor. This work tries its best to deny grand narratives but the narrative of capital ‘A’ Art is one that cannot be avoided. Also, the pieces refers to itself as “this” therefore alluding that it is aware of a gaze and that the viewer may or may not agree with its statement.
