THE THEORY OF EVELYUTION

self portrait

INTRODUCTION

As the late, great Dr. Hunter S. Thompson stated in The Proud Highway, “Every man is the sum total of his reactions to experience.” If there’s something everyone has at some point in their life, it’s a junk drawer of mish-mashed experiences. Every collection tells a story. If you were to take a blind reach into Evelyn’s drawer, you would randomly pull out several triumphs over diversity. Dig a little deeper and find her first piece of sold art at eleven. Hunter wasn’t blowing smoke. These tidbits are just a few examples of what has made her into the ambitious, outspoken, resourceful, risk-taking perfectionist she is today.

HISTORY

The first eleven years of her life were spent on a farm full of mischief to be. The majority of her time was spent outside getting herself into and out of sticky situations. At eleven, her art instructor entered four of her works into Creative Youth, a juried student art exhibition at Carnegie Hall (WV). Sauntering away with First Place, Second Place and an Honorable Mention - the real victory came weeks later when she was notified that someone had purchased a piece, further inspiring her future as an artist. Middle and high school brought on a dizzying range of embarrassing phases while she was determined to figure herself out, better known as her “Evelynution.” Evelyn’s high school art instructor kept a raging fire lit under her, driving all of the untapped creativity out and into the open. She helped her solidify her goal to pursue a profession in the arts.

MUTATION

After three years of trying to make the best of her education at Rochester Institute of Technology, she decided it wasn’t the right fit. A dynamic world demands dynamic people and Evelyn flies through the air without a safety net. Not settling, she moved to New Orleans. She began working at both a traditional graphic design firm and an architectural design studio. The experience she gained from throwing herself into such a drastic change of pace will never be replaced.

ADAPTATION

Tessa Bridal stated that, “Life isn’t worth living without a cause worth dying for.” Evelyn couldn’t imagine her life without passion. Her interests have changed over the years, but one thing remains the same. Be it travel, architecture, photography, community, sushi or simply being a kid at heart, she puts all of herself into anything that intrigues her. Frank Stella said it best, “I don’t like to say I have given my life to art. I prefer to say art has given me my life.”

Evelyn is currently finishing her Bachelor degree in Graphic Design at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA with an anticipated graduation of May 2009.
